Unstable Cliffs above South Casa

4/3/2013

I have spent the last month or so painting on the cliffs above South Casa beach. It is a great view overlooking the beach and the rocky cliffs stretching south towards Wipeout Beach.  I made and sold several plein air paintings there but when I went again last weekend there was yellow police tape across the space where I had been painting and a newly planted sign from the City of San Diego: Warning – UNSTABLE CLIFFS! Stay back!!!

I have been taking my oil paints outside lately. I find they are easier to work with than I thought, despite the problem of thinners and long drying times. Here are a couple of recent attempts at plein air oils.

Spring 2012: More La Jolla seascapes

4/19/2012

I have spent the last 3-4 months painting in La Jolla. I feel like my seascapes are growing in quality as I learn the lessons of the ever-changing oceanic light. I get a lot of positive feedback from the passing art lovers and occasionally I even sell a painting as soon as it dries! Not a bad way to spend a Saturday . . .

    Plein Air

I have discovered the joys of painting outdoors in natural light. This kind of painting forces me to both observe and experience nature more intimately, plus I am more likely to meet people who share a common love of art and the environment we all share.
